Jen and I ventured out Friday for only our third big public outing since Finley’s birth. She had her two week check-up at the doctor. Our first two outings were to the grocery store and to Katelin’s swim lessons earlier in the week, both on the same day! Jen was feeling a bit anxious at first, but we were lucky both trips went smoothly. Finley slept the whole time. Our doctor’s visit went well too, until they had to undress her in the cold exam room and poke and prod her. She wasn’t too happy about that! Finley gained almost a pound though, she’s now 8lbs 12oz up from her birth weight of 7lbs 14oz. The doctor told us they like babies to be at least back up to their birth weight by their two week appointment, so obviously no problems there.
As Jen eluded to in a previous post, she’s a little bit of a worrywart. I’m going to go with a big worrywart and the doctor’s office always seems to bring out the best (depending on how you look at it) of that quality in her. She of course had lots of questions like, “Finley makes weird sounds like she’s gasping for air, can she breathe ok?” or “I feel a ridge on Finley’s head, does she have a brain tumor?.” Now before you go rushing to Jen’s defense, understand that I have to live with these questions everyday until our next doctor’s visit or it gets so bad she decides to call the nurse from home. Sometimes she worries so much that she’s convinced me that the problem is real! Don’t get me wrong, I’m very lucky to have a wife who cares so much. I’ve come to realize, it’s just what mothers do and I’m going to have to live with it.
After the doctor’s visit, we were again feeling adventurous and decided to stop by the station to show off Finley to our co-workers. It was funny, all the single men in the newsroom backed up in a corner and kept their distance. All the women rushed over to hold her. Finley again slept the whole time we were there. With it being as cold as it is, we’ve really had to limit the amount of times we take her outside. Can Spring arrive soon enough? That was a lot of excitement for one week, but hopefully we’ve overcome our anxiety about taking her out and about (or maybe I should say Jen has overcome HER anxiety) and more outings are in the near future.

I know exactly what Jen is going thru…..I’ve been there myself. Even though my son is now 27 years old, I still worry about him! It’s a Mother’s right!
Mike, I’m sure you worry too, but it’s just something that Mother’s go through, from birth to infinity! I’m sure you are very supportive to Jen, and I’m sure she appreciates that!
Good to hear Finley’s checkup went well!
God Bless,

Mike and Jen~Congrats on the great weight gain for her first 2 weeks. That is a tough time for them to gain since they all lose some weight after birth. She must be a good little eater. I know you worry about taking her out but remember you are not taking her cross country in a horse drawn wagon.LOL You have a warm car and she is so bundled up (takes 5 minutes to find skin under all the blankets and clothes on her LOL)and you will be going into a warm building from a warm car. I have had daycare kids for 25 years now and I bundle them all up and take them to the store or to run errands at least once a week…just not when it is snowing….too much tracking snow into the house, van and stores. Enjoy this wonderful time and thank you for sharing all this with us. Have a beautiful day!
